Ella's big adventure got a rainy start today with a loooong Uber ride to JFK. We took the scenic route to avoid traffic, so it was a pretty ride if nothing else.We then learned some great new things about tackling an airport with a kid:
- Curbside checkin is AMAZING.
- You can check pretty much any bulky baby item for free - stroller, car seat, bassinet. Nice.
- TSA agents get just as googly-eyed over a tiny human as everyone else.
- You board the plane more or less forever earlier than everyone else. Time enough to get all the bags situated, and the little one changed and comfortable, before anyone else arrives. It feels kinda like first class with small seats.
As we went to board, Ella was wailing as we passed by a lot of anxious looks on people's faces (maybe imagined, maybe not), hoping they weren't among the unlucky neighbors of this little one, but as soon as we were on the jetway, she was either happy or zonked until well after we landed.
The diaper change in the airplane bathroom was a good time, with a really well-designed changing table incorporation, so it didn't require acrobatics like in some restrooms on the ground. We hit turbulence while I was at work, and Ella gave a big grin. Must have been a fun ride!
All in all, leaving ourselves enough time buffer for things to take longer, it was a super-smooth flying experience.
And now we look to our big adventure on the road! Here's our planned route for the next four weeks:
