The Story of Very Tall Trees

Heading north from the San Francisco Bay Area, we turned inland for a brief stay in wine country, then set a course back to the coastal road. Our camp in the Russian River Valley gave us a pretty morning with fog amongst the trees.

We took highway 128 to get to the coastal road. We had never been on that particular highway, and we found it chalk-full of pretty views, wineries, and forests of amazingly tall trees! We wanted to make good time so we breezed through, but we vowed to come back to this road someday.

Ella got to know something about redwoods: They're a lot bigger than her!

Highway 1 was gorgeous as always. We had both driven that stretch of the coastal road before, but we never get tired of it.

We stopped for some fresh-caught fish, and Ella went for a bite of Kate's arm.

It was getting dark by the time we got to our intended stop in Redwood National Park, and unfortunately the campground we stopped at was full, so we had to just continue driving though the forest in the dark until we happened across an RV park with open spots and laundry facilities (finally!).

A morning by the Klamath River in Redwoods

The next morning we made our way through groves of redwoods, which gave way to increasingly hazy mountains. We grew nervous as it wasn't letting up on our route to Crater Lake...
