Forests, a River, and a Little Voodoo

Mount Hood from many miles away in Madras
The post-eclipse traffic had dissipated in one viable direction out of Madras by the early evening, so we headed north through the high desert. Mount Hood and surrounding Cascades to our west were on fire, so at sunset we got a spectacular show from the smoke. (Sorry, we didn't manage to capture a good photo.) We passed through The Dalles along the Columbia River - Jason wanted to put our stuff on a raft and brave the rapids... Oregon Trail joke - and we settled at a camp along the river.

The next day we headed through Stumptown (Portland) on our way to the Seattle area. We've spent time in Portland before, but Kate hadn't been to the famous Voodoo Doughnuts, so she and Ella went to the line to get a box while Jason did a run along the river.

The way north from Portland on I-5 had been snarled all day (we suspect due to residual eclipse traffic from the day before), and we joined it in the late afternoon. On a tip from one of Kate's friends, we headed up the Olympic Peninsula (across the Puget Sound from Seattle) aiming for a campground on Bainbridge Island. Luckily there were open spaces when we got there well after dark. We turned in and dreamed of the next day in the Emerald City.
