Jason: Marathon Training in the First Week

A week into training on the road, I'd say it's going better than expected. The environments have been beautiful, and so far it's been less of a hassle than I feared. Running along the Grand Canyon was pretty spectacular, but I've also been lucky to enjoy more top-notch routes like the Pacific coast in Malibu.

Yeah, that was awesome.

Training like this has brought its challenges. Heat was the first one I encountered, since we started in Phoenix. Even getting up early wasn't full protection: It crossed 90 degrees before I was out the door. In Sedona, the timing worked out so that we were there mid-day for my interval workout, and I think I downed two liter bottles of water during the run.

I did roughly 30 laps around this baseball diamond when it was about a million degrees.

Altitude was the second one, as we headed north into the mountains. I had forgotten how much of a difference that makes. For the two runs I had this week at 7000+ feet (Grand Canyon one morning and above Jerome another), mercifully I had easy runs proscribed by my training plan. My lungs and heart rate thought I was definitely not taking it easy!

Now that we're on the California coast for a while, beach runs and hilly runs are the themes. Can one ever get tired of ocean views?

I ran by the morning marine layer dissipating over the mountains in Malibu.

I took the sandy route to Malibu Pier.
